Mayor Lauds Elementary School Winners of Labor Comic Strip Competition
Mayor Ko Wen-je presented the prizes to the young winners and their advisors of the top labor issue “4-column comic strip” competition on December 15. The competition is sponsored by the Department of Labor (DOL).
During his address, the mayor pointed out that this is the first time the agency organized a comic strip competition for elementary school students. The winning works explore a wide range of labor-related issues, including workplace safety, workplace harassment, equal rights at work places, labor rights advocacy, and job search scam prevention.
Labor Commissioner Chen Hsin-yu remarked that labor rights awareness should start early with kids. She noted that the competition targets the upper-class students in elementary school. In addition to encouraging teachers to incorporate labor-related topics into their curriculums, they should also seek to stimulate their students’ interest in issues such as labor pride and work environment awareness.
The competition attracted numerous submissions sporting different themes. The winning works highlight topics such as the increase of minimum wage for 2021, work safety of delivery personnel, and overworking of assembly line laborers at face mask factory.
A total of 3 top awards, 5 outstanding awards, and 10 honorable mentioning for each category were selected from a pool of submissions from students across 21 schools.
