Normally, consumer would be able to reference their choice base on the packaging label before purchasing their food products from a retail store, which was impossible in the past to have the same referencing experience when purchasing from vending machines. Being the first city of the nation to promote this campaign, the Department of Health of Taipei City Government guides vending machines manufacturers in placing calories information labels in preserving the health of fellow residents. There are at least 1,400 vending machines of various food products with the calories information labels in numerous locations, such as Taipei Astronomical Museum, Taipei Children’s Recreation Center, Taipei City Zoo, 12 District Sports Centers, Colleges, High Schools, Hospitals, Organizations, Shopping Malls, and etc, by the end of April. These informative labels would allow consumers to reference and calculate their daily calories intake before purchasing and eventually have a more balanced diet. (For average grown adults, male needs 2,000 to 2,300 calories, female needs 1,500 to 1,800 calories) As the health concerns raised by the citizens, and healthy diets have embedded into our daily lives. The Department of Health of Taipei City Government guides the industries by providing adequate health information with the aid of the food manufacturers and educates the residents’ in self monitoring of their food choices so as to promote a healthy consumption environment as a whole.
